The coolest place — Macedon Ranges

In the 1980s, Philippe Morahan was fascinated by the Burgundian Pinot Noir he encountered while studying in Switzerland, and decided to create such delicate Pinot Noir himself in Australia. Morahan researched the cool regions of Australia and ended up in the Macedon Ranges, Victoria state. The Macedon Ranges, located approximately 120km north of Melbourne, is Australia's coolest growing region, with cumulative temperatures of 1200-1300 degrees during the growing season.

The Macedon Ranges, located almost in the center of Victoria state, is located in the Macedon Ranges, which stretches from east to west and blocks high pressure from inland, and due to the influence of the oceanic climate that flows in from Melbourne, the area is cool all year round, especially in the Curly Flats. The area around Lancefield in the south, where the vineyards are located, is known as a particularly cool area and is mainly planted with sparkling grapes and premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Curly Flat's Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have the characteristic cool climate acidity.

In search of delicate power

At Curly Flat, we primarily use the Lila shaping technique (the Y-shape of the vines) for our Pinot Noir. Lila trellis is characterized by good solar radiation conditions for the bunches, which facilitates the ripening of the fruit and an increase in anthocyanin content, and because it has good ventilation, it is said to have the advantage of being less susceptible to diseases such as udon powder. Since 2006, Curly Flat has stopped using herbicides and has adopted biodynamic farming methods, allowing the grapes to ripen more healthily using the power of nature.

natural brewing approach

Both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are fermented with natural yeasts, and the cellar uses gravity structure to move the juice using natural gravity, without the use of pumps. The Chardonnay is mostly fermented in barrels, with slightly reduced MLF to express its characteristic acidity and nuances of lees and minerality. Pinot Noir is made with skin contact to avoid over-extracting the fruit, and is characterized by a very pale color, modest volume, and delicate flavor.

A complex aroma of flowers, citrus, white peach, smoked cashew nuts, oyster shells, and refreshing straw. The palate is powerful yet elegant, with fresh acidity reflecting the cool climate, stone fruit flavors, and oak nuances in a well-balanced manner.
