Bowen Estate is a family run winery founded in Coonawarra in 1972 by Doug Bowen. Growing up with wine-loving parents, Doug developed a taste for wine and an interest in agriculture even before he was an adult. One day, he was moved by Mildara's ``1963 Peppermint Patty'' that he was given to drink by a neighbor's wine collector. Ever since, he became curious about winemaking and enrolled at the University of Adelaide's Rose War College to study cultivation and enology. I will go on to the Sea School.

After graduating in 1971, he joined Lindemann in Coonawarra and worked in brewing, while in 1972 he and his wife Joy purchased 16ha of land south of Coonawarra and planted Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. He left Lindemann in 1975 when a system was in place to make wine from grapes from his own fields, and since then he has concentrated on making his own wine. Now his daughter Emma has taken over the winery, and 2015 marks the Bowen Estate's 40th vintage. Today, wines are still produced in the classic Coonawarra style.

Coonawarra and its soil

Coonawarra is located approximately 400km south-east of Adelaide, and despite being 60km inland from the coast, it is strongly influenced by the maritime climate. Even in summer, clouds moderate the rise in temperature, allowing Coonawarra Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen their tannins over a long growing season.

The land in this area is covered by a layer of red sandy loam called ``terra rossa'' over an upper layer of limestone. The soil is fertile and has excellent drainage, producing grapes with a concentrated flavor, and has produced Australia's leading premium wine since the 1960s. Coonawarra, home to Terra Rossa, is currently home to around 30 small wineries.

Coonawarra Patron Award

In January 2016, Doug was awarded the title of “Coonawarra Patron” which recognizes his contribution to the development and promotion of the Coonawarra community. Doug has been a member of the Kurawarra Growers Association since its founding in 1983, serving as Treasurer from 1986 to 2005 and Treasurer in 1990 and 1991. This title recognizes Doug Bowen's many years of work and achievements in Coonawarra.

Vibrant grapefruit fruit mixed with oak aromas and crisp acidity that persists throughout. Part of the wine is fermented in barrels at low temperatures and aged on the lees for 8 months.
