Teusner Lipky Shiraz [2021] 750ml/Red

Winemaker Kim Teusner and her friend, grower Mick Page, meet at a prominent Barossa winery and share their ideals as they experience vintages together. Teusner Wines began when the pair heard about Barossa grape growers, the Ripkey brothers, in a pub. The Ripke family, six generations of growers, were consulting on clearing an old grenache field in Ebenezer, north of the Barossa, planted by his grandfather. Because the fields are old, the yields are low, and the buyers, one of the major companies known as "Big Boys", who don't value grenache, have bought it at a low price. Unable to maintain the Grenache field, which was losing money the more it was produced, they were talking about replanting it with Chardonnay, which was popular at the time.

Kim and Mick try to save this field of old, knobby trees, and they must work hard to raise money to buy grapes and make wine. It was in 2001, at the age of 27, that Kim Teusner raised the funds to buy a quarter of the vineyard's grapes, changed the Lipkey brothers' thinking, and ensured the survival of the old vine grenache field. For the first year, the wine will be a blend of mainly grenache, with Mataro (Mourverdot) and Shiraz, from the Ripkey family's vineyards, which span from Ebenezer to Lyndoch in the Barossa Valley, with an average age of 60-70 years. I made two types. ``Joshua'' is a style that does not use barrels, and ``Avatar'' is aged in old hogshead barrels for about a year and released the following year. The basic concept remains unchanged.

When asked why she founded Teusner Wines, Kim answered, ``Because I want to enjoy my daily life by drinking the wine I like.'' It also includes the meaning of ``wine at an affordable price.''

Teusner Wines are characterized by the small grains produced by old vines, thick skin, and well-balanced fruit that is rich in flavor. When brewing, we treat traditional varieties as carefully as possible, focusing on bringing out the original flavor of the grapes using a natural approach without unnecessary interference. The brewing process is mostly done by hand. The wine is allowed to sit on the lees, with little lees removal, and is bottled without fining or filtering.

The concentrated Barossa Shiraz flavor is well expressed, with hints of plums, black fruits, and spices. Smooth on the palate with chalky ripe tannins and a dry finish. 'Ripke' is the family name of two brothers who are traditional viticulturists in the Ebenezer area of ​​northern Barossa.
