We produce everything from daily wine that takes advantage of quality characteristics to world-class premium Shiraz.
The history of d'Arenberg begins in 1912, when Joseph Osborne purchased a field in McLaren Vale. After that, Joseph's son Frank expanded the field and the brewery was completed in 1928, and red wine and fortified wine were exported to Europe.
In 1943, Frank's son Francis (nicknamed "Darry") took over, and the first wine was released under the d'Arenberg name in 1959. Since 1983, the Osborn family has inherited the winery and numerous fields over four generations under the direction of current owner Darry's son, Chester Osborn. Currently, in addition to owning a 72ha field in McLaren Vale, we also own our own field in the Adelaide Hills.
d'Arenberg was recognized as a "First Family's Wine" in 2009, contributing to raising the profile of Australian wine around the world, and today continues its 100-year tradition and continues to innovate. d'Arenberg celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2012, and is holding celebration parties around the world.
The diverse uniqueness of McLaren Vale
McLaren Vale, South Australia, is located south of Adelaide and is surrounded by the Adelaide Hills to the east, the Sellix Hill Mountains to the south, and the Gulf of St. Vincent to the west, and is an area with a richly varied landscape. There are many different types of soil, reflecting the varied topography. Iron-bearing stones and chalk are covered by shallow clay loam soils in the hills, while deep clay and sandy loams lie in the flatlands of the valley below the hills.
The average rainfall during the growing season is less than 170mm, and summer temperatures are lower than in the Barossa Valley, and the area near Gulf St. Vincent enjoys cool breezes from the sea. Familiar with McLaren Vale's unique and diverse land and climate, d'Arenberg plants each variety in its proper place and releases wines of distinctive quality.
Squeezing with a basket press
All grapes picked at d'Arenberg, both white and red, are pressed in a wooden bucket-shaped basket press. d'Arenberg believes that the basket press applies gentle pressure to the grapes, resulting in a juice with a gentler texture and the fresh aroma of the grapes. What all d'Arenberg wines have in common is their aromatic aroma and fine texture. Each wine label bears the Basket Press mark.
dead arm shiraz
d'Arenberg's flagship Dead Arm Shiraz is produced with a small amount of fruit from vines affected by Eutypa rata, a viral disease that slowly rots the grape clusters. The disease kills one of the two branches, and the remaining one produces concentrated bunches, which produce a powerfully flavored wine. Dead Arm Shiraz is rich in acidity, with complex flavors of cherry, licorice, spice and olive, accompanied by fine tannins, giving it the ability to withstand long-term aging.
Humorous wine naming
Each d'Arenberg wine has a unique name. For example, Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viognier is made by a bird in the kingfisher family called the kookabukka, which is native to Australia and has a chirping sound similar to the loud laughter of humans (“luffing”). For some reason, it is made by blending Shiraz, a black grape, and Viognier, a white grape. d'Arenberg wines, which have humorous names, are loved and loved by wine fans around the world.
A classic Riesling with aromas of citrus and white flowers. It has a sherbet-like texture and a strong minerality, with a balance of moderate acidity and sweetness, giving it a rich flavor. “The Dry Dam” is named after the dam built near d'Arenberg.
