Dag Johan Sandby, who grew up on the outskirts of Oslo, Norway, has a unique career as a member of the United Nations Security Forces on the border between Israel and Lebanon. After traveling all over the world, he immigrated to the United States in 2004 and fell in love with the natural richness of Oregon and entered the wine business. Meanwhile, Dan Link, who is in charge of cultivation and winemaking at Johann Vineyards, studied cultivation and winemaking at California State University, Fresno, and then worked as an assistant winemaker at Chamisol Vineyard in Edna Valley. - Worked as cultivation manager at Leith Vineyard in the Cruz Mountains.

Link, who was interested in biodynamic cultivation in cooler climates, moved to Oregon in 2007, met Sandbee, and together they began designing the vineyard and founding Johann Vineyards.

Our farm (34 ha) is located to the west of the Eola Amity Hills sub-AVA of the Willamette Valley, and this area is covered with fine-grained sandy soil (granitic). Approximately 10,000 years ago, at the end of the Ice Age, the Missoula Flood (the outburst of the Missoula Glacier Lake in Montana) occurred repeatedly in the Columbia River, and the old topsoil was washed away, and the top layer is now covered with masago soil. In addition, many malformed granite rocks that have been washed away by floods can be found in this area.

Demeter certified biodynamic wine

Johann Vineyards practices biodynamic cultivation and received Demeter certification in 2010. All of our wines are made through natural fermentation, and we also produce unique wines such as the slightly sparkling Petien Naturel, which is made without the addition of yeast or sucrose.

Each wine is produced in a limited edition of less than 1,000 dozen a year, and our policy is to create wines that are completely natural so that the terroir of each region can be expressed in the wine. Johann Vineyards' grapes are also supplied to approximately 20 wineries.

Van Dasser Corridor

The area where Johann Vineyards' fields are located is located in a large chasm-like valley (Van Dasser Corridor) that runs east-west in the Willamette Valley, and because cool breezes flow into the valley from the Pacific coast, the area around the fields remains cool even in summer. The temperature is maintained. The region's cool climate means that even in hot years like 2009, Johann Vineyards' harvest was two weeks later than other regions, ensuring that the wine's alcohol content never exceeded 13.5% and the delicate balance was maintained. It is also shown that good wine was produced. Currently, Johann Vineyards is working with other wineries in the area to lobby the federal government for recognition as a Van Dasser Corridor sub-AVA.

A reserve range cuvée made from grapes grown in sunny plots on the gentle eastern slopes of Johan's own vineyard. The dark cherry fruit is moderately concentrated, with an earthy nuance lurking beneath the fine texture. Silky, with tannic structure and great aging potential. 50% of the total is whole bunch fermented.
