A historic farm with a 170-year history
Hutton Vale Farm's history dates back to 1843, when George Angus established a 400ha farm in the hills of the northeastern Eden Valley. During colonial times, architect George Angus (1789–1879) owned and managed over 10,000 hectares of land near the village of Angaston, Barossa, South Australia. The land has been passed down through generations of descendants of the Angus family and has been used as a mixed farm for over 170 years to this day.
The vineyard, which was opened in the 1960s on one side of the farm, is grown with scions of old Shiraz trees that the family planted at Mt Edelstone in the early 20th century, and where Kim, who is currently attracting attention as a talented Barossa winemaker, grows The wine is made by Teusner. The farm also keeps livestock such as cows, sheep, pigs and ostriches, and grows a variety of vegetables and herbs that are supplied to local restaurants in the Barossa and to high-end grocery stores in Melbourne. The farm also has lodging facilities where visitors can experience country life, offering tours of the historic property, traditional agricultural experiences, and dishes made with livestock and vegetables grown on the farm.
Hutton Vale Farm fields
The first vines were planted at Hatton Vale Farm in 1912. Ronald Angus planted Shiraz at Mt Edelstone and sold the grapes to several wineries in the Barossa. The vineyard was later sold (in 1973) to the Henchki family, but in the 1960s John Angus, the sixth generation of the family, cultivated a vineyard on a section of the farm. I received the scion of an old Shiraz tree. Next, Riesling, Grenache, and Mataro (Mourvèdre) were cultivated, and in the 1990s, the Shiraz fields were expanded and Cabernet Sauvignon was planted. At Hatton Vale Farm, the grapes are dry-farmed (no irrigation) to produce fruit with concentrated flavour, keeping yields low at an average of 2.5t/ha.
Talented brewer Kim Teusner
Hutton Vale Farm's wines were originally produced outsourced to Torbreck's winery. When Kim Teusner, who was a member of the Torbreck brewing team, became independent in 2001 and established Teusner Wines, John Angus, who had trusted Kim from the Torbreck era, decided to entrust his grapes to the independent Kim. I'll make it. Kim participated in this project, knowing the high quality of the Angus family's grapes from his time at Torbreck. He strives to create wines that are as simple as possible, aiming to express the characteristics of old vines and the individuality of a single vineyard.
The 2012 Hutton Vale Farm Riesling, Kim Teusner's first wine, attracted attention as a wine that rewrites the history of an old vineyard in the Barossa. Currently, four varieties are produced: Riesling, Shiraz, Grenache Mataro, and Cabernet Sauvignon, and each wine will be released in limited quantities.
Lemon and lime fruits are layered tightly with minerals, making it extremely dry. It has a firm structure with fresh acidity and a long calcareous finish on the finish. It is created from a single field of poor soil whose topsoil was exposed in the 1960s.
