Delatite High Ground Chardonnay [2022] 750ml/White

A style with the delicacy and strength characteristic of cool regions.

Delatite is a pioneer winery that first planted grapes in the Upper Goulburn region in 1968. Robert and Vivian Ritchie, who have run a grazing and seed production business west of Upper Goulburn for six generations, were introduced to their business by South Australian wine industry legend and friend Jim Irvine. We were advised that the rolling meadows would become great vineyards in the future, so we planted vines in the Delatite area.

After that, we sold grapes to Brown Brothers from 1974 to 1981, but in 1982 we established a winery and began producing our own wine. Since 2005, his son David has taken over the winery business, producing wines that take advantage of the cool climate.

Biodynamic approaches in the Victoria Highlands

Delatite's current 26ha field is located on the hillside (450-500m above sea level) at the foot of Mt Buller near Mansfield. This plateau region stretches from northeastern Victoria to Upper Goulburn, and includes the Great Dividing Range (Australia's largest mountain range), which stretches from Cairns in northern Queensland to the Grampians in southwestern Victoria, and the eastern coastal area, which stretches from inland to Upper Goulburn. Traditionally known as the Victoria Highlands, it is located in the middle of nowhere. Geologically, the climate is diverse, but generally cool, from northeastern Victoria to the central zone.

The topography of the fields varies depending on the slope and direction from northeast to northwest, and the soil is mainly red iron ore, mudstone, and shale (red on both sides) from the Carboniferous period, 3 to 3.5 million years ago. Additionally, the topsoil of the field contains fossils that indicate that this area was the bottom of a lake or sea before tectonic movements.

The varieties planted by Delatite between 1968 and 1976, when the vineyard first opened, were Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir, followed by Merlot, Malbec (1978) and Chardonnay (1978). (1982), Sauvignon Blanc (1986) and Pinot Gris (1996).

Since 2005, all fields have been converted to biodynamic farming, and in addition to sowing and harvesting according to the agricultural calendar based on the lunar calendar proposed by Rudolf Steiner, cow dung and crystal powder are also sprinkled on the fields as fertilizer.

A new development that pursues even higher quality

Delatite was widely known for its aromatic white and red blend wines, but in 2006 it began focusing on Pinot Noir and Shiraz. In 2012, we celebrated 45 years since we started cultivating grapes and 30 years since we started making wine in-house, and in addition to the ``Estate Range,'' we began releasing ``Reserve'' and ``High Ground,'' which pursue even higher quality. I did. ``High Ground'' is made from grapes from our own vineyards and contract vineyards in the King Valley near Strathbogie and Mansfield, within 50km of the winery, while ``Reserve'' and ``Estate'' are made from 100% grapes from our own vineyards. It is made from.

A well-balanced flavor with citrus and melon fruit lightly framed by oak flavor. Whole bunches of grapes grown in the Victoria Highlands are pressed, and 40% is naturally fermented. By fermenting slowly for 27 days, the pure flavor that the cool climate fosters is expressed.
