Matahiwi Estate ME Pinot Noir [2021] 750ml/Red

A new winery in Wairarapa founded by a former finance man fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Matahiwi Estate is a new winery founded by Alastair Scott, who had long dreamed of starting a winery business. Scott, who worked in the financial business in London and Tokyo, returned to his native New Zealand in the late 1990s and settled in Masterton, on the outskirts of Martinborough, in the North Island's Wairarapa, with the aim of establishing a winery.

In 2002, Scott met winemaker Jane Cooper and invited Cooper to become Matahiwi's winemaker. Cooper and Scott shared a strong vision of producing high quality Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir in the Wairarapa, installed state-of-the-art equipment, completed the winery and started a new business from scratch.

The phoenix on the Matahiwi label became the winery's logo, a proud symbol of the revival of winemaking in Masterton for the first time since Prohibition, and the first wine released in 2004 contained the message of opening up the area as a wine producing region.

The grapes are mainly sourced from fields on the northwest outskirts of Masterton, and the main varieties are Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Chardonnay is grown in some fields in Hawke's Bay. The vineyards are covered with cover crops to promote healthy soil and biodiversity, and the fields are sown with oats, chicory and barley peas to provide nitrogen and other nutrients to the vine roots. . Buckwheat and phacelia flowers also protect vineyards from pests.

Mt Hector is a second label wine produced by purchasing grapes from contract growers in northern Wairarapa. Mount Hector is the name of a mountain located in Canada, New Zealand, and Antarctica.

Cherry and plum fruits are framed by spice and oak flavor, with fresh fruit filling the mouth and a supple finish. Matahiwi Estate's second label, made from grapes grown in the warm northern Wairarapa fields.
