Traditional style that ferments whole bunches and matures in large barrels.
The Feraud family is a family of vignerons (vine growers) with a history dating back to the 17th century in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In 1987, Paul Ferro and his daughter Laurence established Domaine du Pégaud independently from their relatives. ``Pegaud'' is a Provence dialect that refers to a ceramic pitcher. Lawrence is currently in charge of managing the domaine, but Paul also provides advice. The domaine's fields are blessed with old vines and are 95% grenache. These include Escondude, which is 75 years old and covered with large stones, Clau, which is over 100 years old and has 13 varieties that can be used for Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Cabanne de Saint-Jean, which is over 70 years old. In his book, The World's Finest Wines, Robert Parker writes, ``I have been an avid fan of this producer for many years and have spent my fortune purchasing every vintage since 1979.'' I have the highest praise for Du Pegaud.
We continue to follow the traditional style and do not destemm the grapes. It is whole bunch fermented using natural yeast and aged in large barrels (Foudre). Pégaud's Cuvée Reserve is 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvedre, and 10% other legal varieties. It has a charming scent reminiscent of Burgundy, and the texture is soft and round. Laurence, a high-grade cuvée, has been aged for two years longer and has a softer, easier-to-drink taste. There is no Rhône lover who is not a fan of Pégaud's earthy, age-friendly wines.
It looks like bright, clear gold. Immediately recognizable aromas of white flowers such as peach, citrus, and honeysuckle. As it ages, aromas of apricot and pear develop. The taste has a lively impression of acidity and minerality.
