Pursuing the potential of Malbec to become a world-famous wine
Catena's history begins in 1902, when Nicola Catena moved from Italy to Argentina and planted a vineyard in Mendoza. Initially producing wine for domestic consumers, the winery grew to become one of the largest in Argentina, but in the 1980s, the current third-generation owner, Nicolas Catena, was inspired by the success and development of high-end Californian wine, and began brewing. Together with director Jose Galante, we set out to make high-quality wine with the aim of ``producing the best wine in Argentina that is recognized around the world.''
In 2001, the flagship "Nicolas Catena Zapata" was launched. Catena's wines became known around the world, winning first and second place in blind tastings held around the world. In recognition of his achievements, Nicholas Catena was named 2009 Decanter magazine's Man of the Year.
Currently, her daughter Laura Catena also participates in wine making and is active as a central figure in the winery.
cultivation
We own five vineyards located at the foot of the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of 850-1,500m. The same variety is grown in fields at different altitudes to produce different types of grapes.
It is located in a high mountainous region with poor alluvial soil and a cool climate. This naturally reduces yields and allows the grapes to ripen slowly and gradually, resulting in grapes with a high concentration of flavor. In addition, in cooler climates, photosynthesis proceeds without interruption, so polyphenols accumulate in greater amounts.
brewing
In 2001, we built a winery equipped with the latest equipment in the La Piramide vineyard. As a symbol of innovation and advancement, Mr. Catena chose a design modeled after the Mayan pyramids, which are said to have had the most advanced civilization in the Americas.
The hand-harvested grapes are sorted on the sorting table inside. The wine is then brewed in brewing equipment equipped with a gravity system. At Catena, the same variety is planted in different fields, each vinified separately, and then assembled to create wine.
This wine can be said to be the culmination of Catena's many years of research into Malbec. Dark, deep violet color. Characterized by a floral aroma and structured tannins.
