Established in 1990 by owner and winemaker James Vrtich in Matakana, 60km north of Auckland on New Zealand's North Island. “Providens has the three elements that I believe are necessary to make a great wine...elegance, balance and finesse.・We brought brewing methods to the new world... Matakana, New Zealand, and challenged the stereotypes of wine lovers around the world.This is a story that started with a love for the great Grand Crus of Bordeaux and ended up competing with them." Mr. James speaks. In 1996, the first vintage, Private Reserve 1993, was presented alongside Cheval Blanc and Petrus 1990 in a blind tasting of famous wines from around the world, and won first place. It is considered one of New Zealand's best red wines.

cultivation

Matakana, where we have our own 2ha farm, is an area with low rainfall and long sunshine hours. The difference in temperature between day and night exceeds 18℃, allowing for ripening with good acidity and balance. Due to the favorable climate and well-drained clay soil containing volcanic iron, the grapes have roots deep underground that absorb abundant nutrients and give the grapes a concentrated flavor. For cultivation, we do not use herbicides or chemical fertilizers, only organic fertilizers that can be returned to nature, and we harvest everything by hand. Leaves and immature fruits are removed and the plants are gently destemmed.

brewing

Fermentation is carried out using only naturally occurring natural yeasts. Aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels sourced from Nivernais. The final blend was determined after 18 months, and then aged further. The wine is bottled using natural gravity to avoid stress. We do not use any antioxidants or preservatives, and we leave everything to nature, from grape cultivation to fermentation to aging.

Smoky, raspberry and vanilla scent. Nuances of raspberry and currants and light, fresh tannins lead to an elegant finish. A smooth and elegant wine.
