Venerable producer who transferred the DO name

In 1927, 11 grape producers came together to establish a cooperative with the aim of producing high-quality wine. It gained international fame by winning the gold medal at the 1929 Barcelona World's Fair. When it was first established, it was called "Bodegas Ribera Duero," but when DO was established in 1982, the name was transferred to DO "Ribera del Duero," and it became "Protos" (No. 1 in Greek). (meaning). Since then, we have been making wine with pride in being "No. 1".

The company owns a vast 2km underground cellar beneath Peñafiel Castle, which is still a tourist attraction in the city and also serves as a wine museum. In 2008, a new brewery was built by Sir Richard Rogers, known for his work on buildings such as Center Pompidou. We are now able to store approximately 15,000 barrels and are pursuing further quality improvements.

DO Ribera del Duero produces red wine made mainly from Tempranillo grapes, while DO Rueda, about 60 km away, produces white wine made from 100% Verdejo grapes.

Cultivation/brewing

The fields, located at an altitude of 750m to 900m, face south and have sandy soil with a high calcareous content. The total cultivation area is over 700ha, but it is all divided into small lots and strictly managed. All harvesting is done by hand. Grapes from older vines are carefully handled by being transported to the winery in 20kg boxes.

We analyze the location conditions of all cultivation plots and the quality of each vineyard, classify the harvested grapes by level, and use fermentation tanks suitable for each plot for brewing. We are committed to producing high-quality wine by making it possible to trace the wine from the vineyard to after it is bottled.

A top cuvée produced in small quantities with extremely low yields due to the careful selection of older vines. Aromas of ripe black fruit, chocolate and vanilla. Powerful and long aftertaste. A modern Spanish wine that stands out from traditional Spanish wines.
