Fragrant and sophisticated Barolo and Barbaresco
The history of Pournot begins in 1923, when Alfred Pournot purchased the Langhe Wine Cooperative, which was in difficult management after World War I. Mr. Alfred Prunnot demonstrated his skills not only as a manager but also as a winemaker, and the winery was so well-known in the world market at the time that when it came to Piedmontese wine, Prunnot was synonymous with wine.
Pournot was the first to introduce the concept of ``Cru'' in Piedmont, at a time when mixing grapes from various vineyards was common. This means understanding the differences in the terroir of each region and creating wines that take advantage of their individuality. Surrounded by a valley, the village of Langhe has a ``micro-climate'' where each field has different sunlight, slope, and soil. However, in Piedmont, the wine producers who owned the farmland and the farmers who tended the fields were separate, and it was common for wine to be made from the purchased grapes. Priority was given to producing wine of the highest quality. Therefore, the single-field ``Barolo Bussia'' released by Pournot was a highly innovative wine that dramatically improved the quality of Barolo.
Mr. Alfred had protected Prunot for over 30 years, but retired in 1956. The winery was taken over by his friend, the winemaker Peppe Colla, and in 1989 Prunnot was taken over by Antinori, with whom he had been a sales partner since then.
Antinori's Reform
Antinori began operating the winery, and while carefully preserving traditional manufacturing methods, he made large-scale investments to further improve quality.

First, field reform. At Pournot, we are gradually increasing our own vineyards by purchasing additional fields in Barbaresco, including Bussia, which is famous as the highest quality field in Barolo. As mentioned above, this is unusual in Piedmont, where winemaking from purchased grapes is common. Furthermore, every year we thoroughly survey all of our 50 hectares of farmland and continue to research the best care methods for the soil. As a result, we are currently trying to plant Syrah in some of our Barbaresco fields. Based on the belief that improving the quality of grapes will improve the quality of wine, we are always looking at the fields and carefully caring for them.
brewing
In 1999, the aging cellar was renovated into a facility equipped with the latest temperature control functions. The fermentation tank was changed from the old concrete one to stainless steel. This not only helps maintain cleanliness and grape aroma, but also helps maintain skin contact during fermentation due to the large opening. The barrels used for aging are 225-liter barriques, which were introduced one after another in Piedmont, and the traditional 10,000-liter large Slovenian oak barrels have been replaced with smaller 5,000- to 7,500-liter-sized barrels. Changed to. The size of the barrel affects the "strength of the barrel flavor" of the wine; the smaller the barrel, the stronger the barrel flavor. Barolo and Barbaresco are mainly aged in these large barrels, resulting in wines with an exquisite vanilla aroma and mellow body.
Stylish and romantic Nebbiolo
Nebbiolo, the iconic grape of Piedmont, is sometimes referred to as the ``beast grape,'' and is a difficult grape with strong acidity and strong tannins, and a strong personality. However, all of Pournot's wines are modern and smart. The aroma of roses and violets will make you feel dizzy the moment you smell it, and the beautiful, vivid acidity. It has an open atmosphere, as if beckoning the drinker, yet has a thick composition that suggests a long life.
Barolo in particular is a thick wine that expresses ``power.'' Barbaresco, on the other hand, is made with an emphasis on femininity, which is similar to Burgundy. Barolo and Barbaresco are inseparable when talking about Piedmont and Nebbiolo. By comparing the two, you can feel the depth of the grapes and the contrast of the land of Piedmont.
