Calabria is located at the tip of the Italian peninsula, between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas. It is also known to have been an important Greek colony, and is dotted with many ruins that tell us about the culture of the pre-Christian era. In addition, wine making, which has been active since then, is still being carried on to this day. Librandi is located in Ciro Marina, a small town facing the Ionian Sea in the historic region of Calabria.
The region is known for its excellent clay soil and location between the Ionian Sea and the Sila Mountains, which provide a temperature difference between day and night, making it the ideal land for growing grapes. Calabria is surrounded entirely by sea, except for its border with the neighboring Basilicata region. That's why Calabrians love fish dishes so much. The Librandi family has been cultivating grapes on this land for four generations, based on the idea that Calabrians can enjoy wine with their daily home-cooked meals and seafood dishes. In 1950, Antonio Librandi started his own wine production and now runs the winery with his younger brother Nicodemus Librandi.
Since 1998, Mr. Donato Lanati, a winemaking doctor known as Enologo, who has won the highest award for Trebicchieri in the Italian wine guide Gambero Rosso, has been working as a consultant since 1998. We are committed to reviving ancient varieties that are dying, and conveying the rich land, history and culture of Calabria through wine.
The company's signature great red wine is an exquisite blend of Calabria's indigenous variety Gaglioppo and international variety Cabernet Sauvignon. After blending, it is aged in Allier barriques (Otaru). It has a rich aroma of berries, honey, and spices, and a concentrated taste that combines power and elegance. “Gravello” is a fantasy name.
